    Collecting Rainwater

Rain_001I’ve been collecting rainwater and using it to water my plants when it doesn’t rain. While this might not be earth-shattering news, I’m just shocked I can collect any water, since there’s been such a drought lately.

I just use a bucket for rainwater collection, but you can actually get a pretty fancy setup- check this website out for fancy rainwater collection buckets. Stephanie at Stop-the-ride has set up an awesome system for collecting rainwater as well.

Do you collect rainwater? What’s your system- are you hopelessly low tech like I am, or are you impressively fancy like Stephanie?

Last year in England we had a hose pipe ban – meaning you could be fined for watering your garden with a hose. So I bought a kind of fancy water butt – a whiskey barrel. First used in Kentucky, then used in the Scotch whisky industry – then shipped to me to store water.

I have a very small garden so it's not too much trouble for me to use it – but for a bigger set up, I think I'd want some kind of pump.

As a gardener, the best benefit for me has been that my acid loving plants have really benefited from being watered with collected rain – as our mains water is full of lime. That's enough of a benefit that even though our water isn't metered (I just pay one annual charge for our water and sewerage) – I still use the collected water for some of my plants.
