Meg from Meg’s Mind has a post this morning that made me remember something I’ve been wanting to post about- expanding my garden next spring. Meg is lamenting the rising cost of groceries, something I was just doing yesterday:
Has anyone else noticed the price of groceries completely skyrocketing
lately? Everything is so costly now that I’m mostly living on whatever
is “Buy one get one”, and that’s usually pasta. Milk is $4.89, Chicken
ON SALE is $3.99 and the prices on fresh fruits and veggies are so
freaking out there that I don’t usually even look anymore. Frozen isn’t
much better.
I know, it’s terrible. Milk is especially heinous. But since I can’t have a cow living in my backyard, I’ve been thinking about at least cutting costs on produce by planting more in my garden. The problem is, the soil is so poor in my yard, that I am forced to have a container or at least a raised bed garden. This can be expensive. I’ve been looking around at items I can use as containers that can be bought expremely cheaply or free.
When I was at my mom’s house the other day, I saw she was throwing out a bucket that had cracked. A cracked bucket is terrible as a bucket, but perfect as a container for gardening. I also came across this post about making your own self-watering containers the other day, and they can also be made cheaply. The self-watering part is a total bonus, since it’s been extremely hot and dry here in Tennessee this summer.
Tell me about what you are doing to cut the cost of produce, or to cut the cost of your container gardening.
