Over at a community blog I read called This Is LaVergne, we have a guy extolling the virtues of Bermudagrass. Har, har, har. I have a hate/hate relationship with Bermudagrass. Sure, it’s easy to grow, it spreads throughout your yard easily, and is drought resistant. But if you want to plant anything other than grass, good luck.
My dad always jokes around about the time his neighbor asked him what was the best way to grow Bermudagrass. Dad told him to clear out a spot in his lawn, plant some expensive flower seed, and then sit back and wait for a week or two. The guy asked him if the flowers would choke out the grass, and when was he supposed to plant the grass seed. Dad just said, "Plant expensive seed and the Bermudagrass will come.
That’s about true, too. It is so invasive. Not that the tall fescue that most Middle Tennesseans plant is any better- in fact, it is classified as an "Invasive Exotic Plant" by the Tennessee Exotic Pest Plant Council.
I’m pretty "meh" about grass in general, though. If I didn’t intend to sell my house within the next five years, and if I didn’t live so close to so many other people, I’d probably do away with grass altogether. I’ve just never really seen the point in fertilizing and watering so you can cut your grass every week. If I wanted a lush green carpet, I’d buy one at the Home Depot.
