Jeffrey over at The Fun Times Guide To Going Green writes today about a hot issue in my household- reel lawnmowers. I have a gasoline powered lawnmower and a reel lawnmower. Our gasoline powered lawnmower gets more use for several reasons. The biggest is that we have some very tough weeds that tend to spring up practically overnight, and the reel lawnmower won’t cut them- it only rolls over them.
That said, the noise of a gasoline powered lawnmower makes me physically sick to my stomach and if it’s me mowing, I’m using the reel lawnmower. There are many advantages to using a reel lawnmower- Jeffrey lays them out:
1. They’re light.
2. They’re quiet.
3. They’re environmentally friendly.
4. They’re better for your grass. (Rotary mowers tear the grass. Reel
mowers cut the grass like scissors, leaving a fine spray of cuttings as
mulch for your yard.)
5. They’re maintenance free.
6. They’re as easy to push as much heavier motorized mowers.
7. They don’t blow exhaust into your face while you’re mowing.
They really ARE better for your grass, I’ve noticed a definite difference when we mow with our gasoline powered mower vs. the reel mower. Head on over to Jeffrey’s place and read the rest of his post for more info on reel mowers.

We got one from an older couple that was moving into retirement center. We love it. We need to get the blades sharpened but I love the no gas, no smoke, no noise and all that.
